Simple Machines at Home

For this assignment we had to go home and take pictures of the six kinds of simple machines. Simple machines are things that make work easier. Without them things in life would be alot harder to do, so here are my examples of them.

This type of simple machine

is a knife which is a wedge. It

is found in my kitchen for food. It

is helpful to us because it breaks

down our food so it's easier to eat.

This simple machine is a wheel and

axle. The tire is found in my garage

from my brothers car. Without the

wheel and axle the car would not be

able to move, so that is why this

simple machine is important.

In this picture I have

my blinds from my living
room. The simple machine is a pulley

that makes the blinds open and shut.

Without it, the window would have to

be open or shut at all times.

This simple machine is a screw. It

was found in my house from my

dad's tool box. Screws help in our

everyday lives by holding things

together so they don't come apart.

These are scissors also found in my

house, specifically in my desk drawer.

They are a lever and it makes cutting

things easier. It lifts both sides up to be

called a lever.

These are my stairs found in my house.

They are an example of an inclined

plane. Without them it would be

alot harder to get up and down around

my house, so that's how it makes work

easier.

So as you can see, simple makes work easier. All of these tools can help you with your everyday life, so keep using simple machines!

*Inclined Planes, Wedge, and Screw

An inclined plane is a sloped surface that makes work easier by breaking down a movement into smaller incraments. I used a ramp in my picture for the inclined plane. The load is the car and the effort is the engine to make it go. Other inclined planes are stairs, hills, and slides.
Another simple machine is a wedge. It is two inclined planes placed back to back to make work easier by breaking jobs into smaller parts. I used a knife cutting an orange, with the person holding the knife as the effort and the load as the orange. An ice scraper is also an exampe of a wedge.
The screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. In my drawing for a screw the effort is the screw driver and the load is the wood it's cutting into.

*Levers, Wheel and Axle, Pulley

A lever is used to increase force and speed. For my example I used a balance and the load is what is being lifted. The effort is what is pushing down on the other side of it and the fulcrum is what it is sitting on. Another example of a lever is a teeter-totter.
The pulley changes the direction of a force. I used a flag pole as my example. The fulcrum is where the rope goes around the wheel, the load is the flagpole because it's being lifted, and the effort is the person lifting the rope. Another item that uses a pulley is a crane.
A wheel and axle is used to make stuff move easier. I drew a car as my example. The load is the whole car, the effort is the engine cause it makes it go, and the fulcrum is the center of the wheel, known as the axle. A bicycle also uses a wheel and axle.

Blog #2-Project Runway

For stem this past week, we have been making jewelry/accessories out of simple machines. I chose to make a headpiece out of a washing machine pulley belt, with gears, screws and feathers to make it more interesting. The usefulness of the simple machine is to help keep the washer put together. My inspiration was to do something different than the original earrings, necklace or bracelet, so I saw the belt and thought a headband would be neat, and that's what it came to. The overall experience was very fun, but the fashion show was definitely kind of embarrassing.

Hi, I'm Haley.

My name is Haley, and I have a brother named Damian. Even thought we fight quite often, he's always helpful and supportive to what I do. My lovable parents are Jeff and Lori. Sports are a big part of my life, I play volleyball and softball. I am also a big fan of the New York Yankees, North Carolina Tarheels, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. I'm so thankful for all my friends and family in my life.
